EFIC response to Commission’s Public Consultation on Digital Product Passport – rules for service providers

The European Furniture Industries Confederation welcomes the opportunity to provide its views on the European Commission’s public consultation on the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and related obligations for service providers.

The digital product passport, introduced by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, will bring many benefits for both consumers and manufacturers. It is an important tool for making information available throughout the lifetime of a product, while empowering consumers by allowing them to make more informed decisions, as products will be easily comparable.

The product passport is a tool that may facilitate a more circular economy if designed correctly and harmonised at EU level. It is however crucial that the digital product passport is workable for the industry and value chain, including SMEs and microenterprises, and it should equally apply to imported products to ensure a level playing field. Without such considerations, there is a significant risk that the DPP could impose excessive administrative burdens, thereby hindering its intended benefits and creating disproportionate challenges for smaller enterprises.
